Sixteen candles, 117 candles

Happy 117 birthday to Martha Graham– the modern dance innovator of innovators, the brain behind the contraction, the spiral, and the idea that dance should be about truth not simply beauty. Also a big- what’s the opposite of womanizer? menanizer? She either married or hooked up with most of the men in her company, particuarly another famous dancer, Ted Shawn. She did manage however, to open a lot of eyes about the range of emotion that dance can express and developed a new dance vocabulary to carry out her vision.

“All that is important is this one moment in movement. make the moment important, vital, and worth living.  Do not let it slip away unnoticed and unused“- M. Graham

If it all comes down to one movement on your birthday, I’m guessing it’s the moment of making a wish over a flaming cake. Wish for lung power Martha, 117 candles is a lot to blow out.

"She walks in beauty'- poem excerpt- Lord Byron

  1. My grandmother was privileged to have seen a performance of Martha Graham. Thank you Miss Martha from all of us dancers who owe you so much for your pioneer work in the art of dance.

  2. Wow, that’s amazing! I would have loved to see her in ‘Cave of the Heart’. It’s true, we do owe her a lot! good luck to you Vladimir, in your own dance life!
